Crazy scenes across Hong Kong for the past few months as the panic buying craze spread faster than the virus. Supermarkets and pharmacies stripped bare. Even things like toothpaste (?) Like brushing your teeth was going to put Omicron off! “Sorry, mate, your breath stinks like stale dog biscuits. I’m going to infect the woman behind you instead. Unlike you, she flosses, too,” Omicron didn’t say.

Last month, Home Kong Kitchen volunteer Mojo Hobo Kaye launched his campaign to ‘Make Hong Kong Barely Tolerable Again‘ by urging Hongkongers to ‘Stop the Woofing Panic Buying!’ He then stole and fraudulently used my credit card to purchase himself a new baseball cap emblazoned with his slogan. Yesterday, Carrie Lam announced that she would not be running for a second term as Chief Executive. Government sources refused to confirm or deny whether Mojo had influenced her decision. However, Junius Ho warned that Mojo’s hat might have contravened the National Security Law. Police are still investigating whether the poodle colluded with foreign forces when he purchased the cap on Amazon.

The empty shelves, soaring food prices and tough restrictions have been making things trickier at Home Kong Kitchen. But thanks to the dogged determination of HKK‘s incredible volunteers, we have somehow managed to keep operating and delivering home baked breakfasts, dry foods, canned foods and medical supplies to the homeless, migrants and refugees. Thanks to everyone who has generously contributed! Every humble delivery of just a few necessities has felt like a mini-miracle. We are now collecting gifts of food, clothing, books, toys and festive treats for our Easter Bun Run and would LOVE to have your support! Email hello@homekongkitchen.com to find out how you can help!

Excited to be joining the brilliant Noreen Mir on RTHK Radio 3‘s 123 Show talking about Home Kong Kitchen, which recently celebrated its first birthday and received a Happy Homes Award from the Mission For Migrant Workers!

Meanwhile, catch me performing my regular humour column Sharp Pains (the last episode was rather timely and aptly called Bake Fail) and get ready for the return of Mental Ideas on RTHK Radio 3!

WOW! It’s been 10 MONTHS since Home Kong Kitchen got on a roll and started making serious dough! We’ve spent nearly a year turning our kitchens into mini-Hiroshimas and baking a difference to feed Hong Kong’s homeless! 🇭🇰

Our initiative started as a response to news reports that food waste charities were struggling to feed the homeless during the 3rd Wave of the pandemic. So what started out as the Baker’s Dirty Half Dozen began to bake our own and donate it to Breadline in weekly food drives.

As more and more bighearted Homekongers have rallied to our cause, Home Kong Kitchen has risen. We now bake, collect and deliver homemade breads, bagels and muffins directly to people living on the streets, in unlicensed shelters and refuges most days!

This Easter, Home Kong Kitchen‘s bionic baking community delivered dozens of afternoon teas to homeless shelters and refuges across Hong Kong! Props to Alana Ho for baking the scones, Chriz Lim for the lemon cakes, Raquel Ate for the giant banana cake and our original Baker’s Dirty Half Dozen for the hot cross buns! Not forgetting our amazing community of artists @ Mental Ideas for their handcrafted notes and inspiring artwork!

Besides our regular weekly deliveries to unlicensed shelters and homeless charity ImpactHK, Home Kong Kitchen is now delivering free breakfasts to anybody who needs it anywhere in Hong Kong! If you and your family are struggling to put food on the table, or if you’re from a refuge or shelter that has not yet sampled our baking and would like to, please take a moment to register!

We have lots of events lined up over the summer, including baking workshops in collaboration with Breadline @ Refugee Union, a monthly Picnic Project, a novelty cookbook and our first Bijou Pâtisserie, where you can order our baking! We can’t promise it will be the best you’ve ever tasted, but we CAN promise that every cent we make is donated directly to homeless charities!

To volunteer for HKK as a home baker, bread donator or artist, or to try our baking, email hello@homekongkitchen.com.

Last month, I announced my pie in the sky intention of making, collecting and distributing 100 Christmas Gift Socks to the homeless! Thanks to the amazing generosity and support of bighearted Homekongers, I can only ever find one sock and that target was nearly trebled!!!

Thanks to everyone who donated their time, energy, creativity and baking to Home Kong Kitchen in 2020! It’s because of you that HKK is collecting and delivering bread, bagels, muffins and other gifts to homeless people living in unlicensed shelters and refuges most days! We are also making weekly deliveries to Impact HK every Friday!

There are many ways you can volunteer for Home Kong Kitchen: you can bake a difference as part of our community of home bakers, you can make a difference as a bread donator, or you can create a difference as an artist on our sustainable bread boxes!

Thank you for your kindness and support! 💜 💜 💜
